Invasive Species

Invasive species pose a threat to habitats all over the world.

When humans move animals and plants around the world they have very little idea about what unintended consequences might result.

If a species arrives in a new place and suddenly finds itself subject to far less intense competition or much easier environmental conditions its population numbers can explode.

Island species tend to have been isolated from the rest of the world's land mass for long periods of time frequently struggle to compete with or to defend themselves against species that have evolved under different and/or more difficult conditions.

Dr Mark Spencer is the Curator of the British and Sloane Herbariums at the Natural History Museum and will talk about some of the invasive species that have colonised islands all over the world.
